Three weeks on from the World Cup Final and already the European club season is up and running. Cristiano Ronaldo did not wait for the tournament in Russia to finish before landing in Italy. His move to Juventus feels like a significant event; it is certainly being portrayed that way by Italian observers. Serie A has been given a shot in the arm by his transfer, while Real Madrid, masters of the marquee signing, appear to have been caught unawares by his departure. Madrid could yet take advantage of the early closing of the transfer window in England to acquire reinforcements. And it’s easy to forget that last season they achieved what no other club had ever done in the Champions
League by retaining their title.
