“‘Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.’ ANTON CHEKHOV”
It’s that old ‘show, don’t tell’ thing. By putting a specific, detailed image in front of your readers, you draw them into the scene and compel them to experience and interpret what they see and feel for themselves. Showing usually makes the writing more interesting and more effective. It compels readers to create their own mental picture and to become directly involved in the story, deducing facts from the information they’re given. It’s interactive and participatory.
