There’s a feature in the Guardian in which authors are asked about the books they like or detest, the book that changed the author’s life, or the book they wish they’d written. All that sort of thing. I’m reading a 1930s thriller reprint which I’m glad I hadn’t written, I wish I hadn’t bought and which I will not be giving to a loved one.
