I’ve finished revising my manuscript and I now think it’s ready to submit to agents. I’ve heard that January is a good time and I’m planning to pull my package together over the Christmas holidays. I’m wondering where to start. I’m not sure how to pitch my book, if I should include a synopsis – and what is a synopsis? – and the best way to approach agents. Do I email or write a letter and what should I include? Should I submit to a raft of them and hope for the best or to one or two at a time? And what do I do with rejections? I’m both terrified about the process and excited.
Being ready to submit your manuscript is a great place to be in. Congratulations! There are involved answers to all your questions, which I can’t fit in to this article, so instead I have a checklist to jump start the submission process. Your question on rejection and acceptance letters is also relevant and I’ll address that in next month’s column. Be sure to look out for that.
