This issue, Claire Gillo looks at the logistics behind running aphotography business and talks to an events photographer
Apressing issue!
I’ve been asked to photograph an event where there will be lots of well-known celebrities. The client I’m doing the job for said I could sell the images to the press but I don’t know how that would work. Any ideas on where to start?

The easiest way to sell your images to the press is to have a stock photo agency do it for you. There are some obvious choices, such as Getty, Alamy and Shutterstock, but these are highly competitive stock websites that don’t always offer the returns. Smaller agencies like SWNS (swns.com) could be a better option. On its website, it states: “SWNS is completely incentivised to earn you the maximum fee possible. We split all content proceeds with the copyright holder, meaning it’s in our interest to work hard for you. The amount you can earn from a photo, video or story varies depending on the publisher. In the current market, online usage generally earns a smaller fee than use in print.
