Claire Gillo shares her thoughts on self-publishing and speaks to a pro in the industry about his new photography book
Self-publishing options
I’d love to write a photography book, however, I’m not very well-known in the industry and I’m unsure if a publisher would be interested in my idea. What are my options for self-publishing? Lucas Honold
Self-publishing is a great way to start writing your own photography book. There are many advantages, including having complete editorial control over the content of the book, where and how you market your book and also where you publish it. On the flip side, you won’t receive any cash advancement as you might with a publisher, you’ll get no help with proofreading and editing (we’d recommend getting someone to proofread your book before you send it to press) and you won’t have easy access to any of the big book retailers.
That said, self-publishing still serves a great purpose and enables anyone to write and produce their own book. The self-publishing platforms vary greatly in terms of price and features. Here is our list of recommendations for you to look into so that you can get started…
• Amazon KDP
• Apple Books
• IngramSpark
• Bookbaby
• Barnes & Noble
• Smashwords
• Blurb
