Iz Hesketh

The actor talks joining the cast of Hollyoaks, telling trans stories, and the realities of performing drag BY FELICIA KOCH
“Everything that she does is so inherently trans”
FELICIA KOCH (she/her) is a travel-loving writer with a passion for creating authentic content for the queer community. @distresseddyke @fatallyfelicia
Photo Ray Burmiston

Iz Hesketh, who has just stepped off of set, looks stunning as ever in an all-red ensemble. She makes my hoodie and bun combo feel shameful on a weekday afternoon. Not only is Iz a jaw-droppingly gorgeous drag performer and stage actor, she’s now playing a new trans character, Kitty, on Hollyoaks. It’s impossible to be anything other than excited as her effortless energy fills my Zoom screen.

The power of queer joy
Many of us find life a bit of a struggle, and it’s no surprise. Even now (she says at 62, having come out at 19), queer people grapple to find their feet in an environment that encourages hate. This is why International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Lesbophobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBLIT) on 17 May exists. It started as IDAHO but the list of phobias has been added to as the world finds new ways to stigmatise us.
Decoding my love for Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart altered my teenage self ’s brain chemistry. I realised this when I rediscovered my Pinterest account. I had a board dedicated to style inspiration. At least 60% of the images were of KStew. Looking at the collection my younger self had compiled was eye-opening. How had I not known I was gay all along!?
