When I came out in 2015 the last thing on my mind was the impact it would have on holidays or travel. But the reality is that being lesbian, bisexual or trans carries with it significant risks when travelling or living abroad, not to mention the fact that there are 72 countries where it is still illegal to be gay and 45 where sexual relationships between women are illegal.
There are also still eight countries in which homosexuality can result in the death penalty and dozens more where homosexual acts can mean imprisonment. For the trans community, invisibility and the failure to even recognise their rights and needs is as much an issue as the threat of being jailed, tortured or killed.
