“Never fuck someone who doesn’t think you’re literally the hottest thing in the fucking world.” Stevie Boebi, YouTube’s premier purple-haired erotic educator, is giving me some truly stellar sex advice. I’m riveted, taking mental notes, making the most of this rare opportunity to garner gems of saucy wisdom from the queen of Lesbian Sex 101. We’re on a transatlantic Skype date. It’s Friday night in London for me, but in Stevie’s sun-drenched West Hollywood home it’s still daytime. She looks relaxed and radiant, all warm smiles and wisecracks, clutching an enormous mug of coffee and ensconced in nothing but a white towelling dressing gown.
If you’re unfamiliar with Stevie’s informative, hilarious content, you’re seriously missing out. Since becoming a full-time YouTuber seven years ago, she’s earned the devotion of close to 750,000 adoring subscribers. Videos like “How to eat pussy THE RIGHT WAY” and “Literally how to scissor” rack up millions of views apiece.
Stevie’s output is always thoroughly researched, full of practical advice, and expertly edited to maximise the LOLs. But she’s not just making funny videos about fucking, she’s providing a much-needed public service, supplying information many lesbians and bi women struggle to find elsewhere.
As Stevie points out, in mainstream media lesbians are simultaneously “oversexualised and undereducated” about our own sexuality. Most school sex education fails to cater for queer students. According to a report by Stonewall, just one in six LGBTQI young people in the UK have been taught about healthy same-sex relationships. The situation is just as dire in the US. A study by the Public Religion Research Institute revealed that only 12% of millennials had any mention of same-sex relationships in their sex ed, and several states have laws forbidding teachers from even mentioning LGBTQI issues.
Stevie, who grew up in a tiny town in Texas, explains that her own high school sex ed was strictly abstinence-only. “I wasn’t even finding out about straight sex, much less queer sex. Everything I do, I do it because I’m angry for my younger self. I’m mad that I didn’t have this when I was growing up, and also that we’re still lacking queer-informed sex education today.”
TASTED PUSSY AND CAME OUT THE NEXT DAY”
As well as giving wonderful tips on how to get a woman off, Stevie’s videos teach us that our pleasure matters. They emphasise the importance of safe sex and consent, dispel myths that genitals should only look or smell a certain way, and tackle challenging topics like “Can I have sex after assault and trauma?” There’s also a healthy amount of humour. Case in point: her recent “Positive affirmations for lesbians – ASMR” vid, featuring Stevie whispering the following phrases into a microphone: “Of course you can wear Birkenstocks to a business meeting, what else would you wear?”, “That carabiner could use more keys, if you ask me” and – not a joke, but an excellent point nonetheless – “You don’t have to be cis to be a lesbian”.
