Back to Litchfield
NIC CROSARA explores the impact of Orange Is The New Black 10 years after the show first premiered
Piper and Alex’s prison wedding. Sophia teaching her fellow inmates (and many viewers at home) about female anatomy. Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren trying to seduce Piper with poetry. Piper getting out of solitary and hooking up with Alex in the chapel. These are just some of the many unforgettable moments from Netflix’s game-changing original show Orange Is The New Black (OITNB).
Time can be a trippy thing. It’s hard to believe that on 11 July 2013, a decade ago, OITNB premiered on Netflix. The first episode opened with Piper and her ex-girlfriend Alex getting intimate in a shower before the scene cut to Piper taking her first shower in Litchfield prison after being imprisoned for transporting drug money for Alex.
“The show is groundbreaking”
Natasha Lyonne to DIVA, June 2014
While the blonde, white and naive Piper was our introduction to life at Litchfield, she was definitely not the heart of the show. Instead, viewers were introduced to a diverse range of women and their nuanced backstories, many of them being women of colour and/or LGBTQIA.
