CULTURAL APPROPRIATION
Everywhere I look, there are rainbows. Every company and their granny has gone hard on the gay, trying to out woke each other with rainbow cups, window displays and glitter for days. Straight friends are using rainbow hashtags on their brunch pics on Instagram, and everyone – even that homophobic dude bro from school – seems to be wearing rainbow t-shirts. What in the fresh hell is going on? I know LGBTQ people didn’t invent the rainbow – pretty sure Mother Nature lays claim to that one – but there’s something a bit cultural appropriation-y to my mind about people who don’t identify as under the queer umbrella using a symbol which has been synonymous with our community since artist Gilbert Baker designed the flag in 1978.
