Horrific, haunting images of the Holocaust can be brought to mind with just one word: Auschwitz. The remains of this notorious concentration camp are, today, one of Poland’s top tourist attractions, where LGBTIQ visitors are reminded of the persecution of the “pink triangle” prisoners.

AUSCHWITZ IS THE GERMAN NAME FOR THE Polish town of Oswiecim. It’s located in the south of Poland, close to the city of Krakow. Unfortunately for the Polish, Auschwitz/ Oswiecim will be forever remembered for its dark Nazi past; as a death camp, as a code word for evil, and a symbol of the unspeakable atrocities of the Holocaust.

In 1939, when Germany, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland, it triggered the start of World War II. Next year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the six Nazi concentration camps – or death camps – the best known among these being Auschwitz.

The vast, 191 hectares of Auschwitz became embroiled in controversy once again recently when the current right-wing populist Polish government attempted to outlaw any idea that the camps be linked to Poland or the Poles during the war.

It’s a flagrant attempt to rewrite history. It seeks to omit the evidence that many Poles were complicit in helping the Nazis implement the heinous “Final Solution” to exterminate the Jewish population of Europe, and that many Polish anti-Semites gladly welcomed both the policy and the camps.

The entrance to the camp as it stands today.
