CATHOLICS DEFY POPE TO BLESS GAY MARRIAGES
When the Pope ruled back in March that the Catholic Church would not bless same-sex marriages, the response from LGBTQIA+ communities was a mixture of “we don’t want you to anyway” and/or “how dare you pour hate on us all the time”.
Either way, we weren’t happy.
But some Catholics were outraged on our behalf, displaying true allyship in the face of papal hate. One of these was Boston-based organization, DignityUSA, which fights for LGBTQIA+ rights in the Catholic Church. They launched an initiative to fight back, choosing the global Pride Month of June to make a statement.
Their team and partner groups enlisted hundreds of Catholics from around the world to bless LGBTQIA+ couples during an online service, inviting Catholics everywhere to join them to send a clear message to the Vatican that they no longer support the mistreatment of gay people.
The event was a huge success, with families taking the opportunity to show they are allies of our communities, despite their religion. It’s unclear how the Vatican will respond, but it’s certainly shaken them up.
