Letter from the Editor

Did you know, this is the first time that we’ve ever given a ‘solo’ cover to John Barrowman as Captain Jack? Granted, he did feature on the cover of DWM 386, alongside the Tenth Doctor and Martha, and also on one of the multiple covers for DWM 398, which depicted most of the cast from The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End. But despite those two occasions, John has never been our main cover star, and neither have we ever devoted a cover to Doctor Who’s first ongoing spin-off series, Torchwood.

Well, as Torchwood celebrates its 10th anniversary this month, we’ve rectified that at long last. John is interviewed at length on pages 18 to 26, and it’s clear to see just what an important part Captain Jack has played in John’s life. What’s more, John is clearly keen to resurrect Jack once more for television – and given the number of times he’s come back to life already, would you bet against it?

Of course, John isn’t just a fantastic actor – he’s also a phenomenal singer. While preparing this issue, the DWM team has been through a medley of all John’s greatest hits. I Am What I Am is his theme tune, of course. But we’ve also been enjoying his Top 20 smash I Made it Through the Rain, and his extraordinary cover of Katy Perry’s I Kissed a Girl. Best of all is his version of The Doctor and I, John’s very own special tribute to his time on Doctor Who, which not only includes a line about Captain Jack’s cheeky fantasy to be ‘defabricated’ by the Doctor, but also confirms that the plural of Ood is Oods. If you’ve never heard it, you really need to check it out.
