World Enough and Time

Inside the spaceship. We are dying. All of us on this ship, dying. Everything is dying. Our world is rust. Our air is engine fumes. Doctor Who is required…

WARNING: Spoilers!

What can we say about World Enough and Time? (Seriously, what can we say, without spoilering the bejesus out of you?) If you’re reading this issue on the day it hit the newsstands, World Enough and Time is still over three weeks away – or 10,000 years, depending on which end of the ship you’re at [see below – Ed] – and you’re better off not knowing too much too soon. It’ll only break your heart. So stop reading now if you’re allergic to even mild spoilers. But for everyone else…

Okay, first off, the cold open. It’s… no, really, it’s… OH. MY. GOD!!!

And that’s pretty much all we can tell you about the pre-titles sequence.

So, what else? Post-titles, there’s a spaceship. A big one. A 400-mile-long-and-100-mile-wide one. Which was heading towards a black hole. Then somebody noticed. Now it’s reversing away from a black hole. Very, very slowly. All engines on reverse thrust. But so unbelievably huge is this spaceship, and so scarily close to the big ol’ black hole, that time is passing slower at the top of the ship than at the bottom. Because that’s what happens. “It’s absolutely true,” insists showrunner Steven Moffat, who wrote this episode. “It’s a rock-hard fact.” It’s called time dilation, and it explains why two working clocks will report different times after different accelerations.
