Electronic Sound  |  Issue 114
When we heard that John Foxx’s major project for this year was going to be a book of his artwork, we immediately started making plans to feature it in Electronic Sound in a big way. ‘Electricity And Ghosts’ is an opportunity for us to create a radically different ES cover story, one that focuses on visual art rather than on audio recordings, although it still makes sense in the wider context of electronic music. After all, this is a genre that often embraces sound, design, art and technology in various ways, and it’s intriguing when the elements merge to produce some unique and special work. You might even describe it as a sort of synthesis.
We’ve invited Foxx to tell us about some of his favourite images from ‘Electricity And Ghosts’ for our cover feature. You can see the process of him designing himself, together with environments for him to occupy, in much the same way Ultravox! was a sonic space for his ideas. The result is a fascinating glimpse into his artistic approach, techniques and aesthetic principles, as well as his interests, obsessions, hopes and fears. It’s very much the synthesis of John Foxx.
We have a wealth of entertaining reads elsewhere in the magazine too. This month’s other highlights include Jeff Mills, John Grant, Suzanne Ciani, Orbital, Keeley Forsyth, Wolfgang Tillmans and Radio 6 Music DJ Tom Ravenscroft. We also have a new regular item in The Back called The Best Of…, which we think you’re going to really enjoy. Our first volunteer is μ-Ziq man and Planet Mu boss Mike Paradinas, who talks about peaches, thigh-high socks and geek pies. As you do.
