AN EMBROIDERY GROUP IS TAKING A STAND AGAINST RUSSIA’S INVASION OF UKRAINE, USING NEEDLE AND THREAD

In Greek legend,Ariadne’s ball of red thread helpedTheseus find his way out of the labyrinth after killing the minotaur.The phrase also refers to the act of solving a problem through multiple means.

■ASTHE WAR IN UKRAINE continues, a group of women are taking a stand against the Russian occupation, not with guns, but with needles and thread.The collective Ariadne’sThread was founded in March 2022 by Polish curator Magdalena Glowacka as a safe meeting place for Ukrainian women in Greater London and Surrey. Now it’s an international network, with members in East Sussex, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Norway and Ukraine itself. And currently, they’re working on Blue Cornflowers…: a tapestry to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees and awareness of Ukrainian culture, and Russia’s attempts to erase it.
