Living Blues #244 (August/September, 2016) is a special extended edition focusing on the vibrant blues scene in Jackson, Mississippi. With support from the Jackson Convention and Visitor’s Bureau we sent our team of writer Scott Barretta and photographer Bill Steber to the City with Soul to check out the contemporary blues scene. What they found was an active, energized music scene that was thriving and expanding. There were the elders like King Edward, Dorothy Moore and Jesse Robinson, but there was also a whole wave of new artists coming up playing blues—Jackson blues—all of them influenced by the elders, the scene and, for many, their own roots in the area. Eddie Cotton, Grady Champion, JJ Thames, Gearshifter, Jarekus Singleton, and many others are at the forefront of a new wave of blues activity in Mississippi’s capitol city. Blues scholar Jim O’Neal also wrote a historical analysis of Jackson blues, providing rich details that set the context for everything that is happening today. We also provide lists of things to do in Jackson, places to go see live blues and a guide to soulful dining. All of this, plus Blues News, the latest CD and book reviews and radio charts and the 2016 Living Blues Awards winners are announced.
