The new Stadler BEMUs will replace the Metra diesel-hauled push-pull trains currently used on the Beverly branch. Metra MP36PH-3S No. 410 is seen rounding the curve off the branch into Vermont St, Blue Island on June 6, 2022 arriving from Chicago.

STADLER has won an order to build 16 Battery Electric Multiple Units (BEMU) for Chicago area commuter rail operator Metra.
These will be the first battery powered units in mainline use in the USA. Unlike battery powered trains in Europe, which often serve electrified stations enroute (where they can recharge), Metra plans to use the new trains on the completely non-electrified Beverly Branch of the Rock Island network. This short 17 mile route, from Chicago La Salle St station to Vermont St Blue Island, is entirely within the city’s builtup area and is currently served by diesel-hauled double deck push-pull sets, although outside peak hours these are much larger than the number of passengers.
