Offering inspiration and a jump start for the imagination, fiction submissions for the Fall issue of The First Line journal, with a deadline date of 1 August, must begin with the line: ‘The Simmons public library was a melting pot of the haves and have-nots, a mixture of homeless people and the wealthy older residents of the nearby neighbourhood’.
Fiction, any genre, should be around 300-5,000 words long and there is also the opportunity to submit four part stories using the Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter sentences which should be submitted as one piece before the deadline of 1 February 2021.
Non-fiction critical essays on a favourite first line from a literary work will also be considered, of 500800 words.
