What is Substance? To those new to digital content creation, Substance is the name given to a suite of tools that has specialised in creating materials for 3D artists. However, since the Substance tools are now part of the Adobe Creative Cloud family, Substance now means a digital content creation set. The Adobe Substance 3D Collection still has all of the industry-leading material creation components as before, combined with procedural modelling and scene-building tools. These additions mean that for many artists who use Adobe products, the world of 3D is now only one click away.
This tutorial is aimed at artists totally new to Substance, and is made based on the assumption that the user has full access to an Adobe Substance 3D Collection subscription. I will demonstrate how each of the core Substance applications is used in a simple workflow. We will create a science-fiction style corridor that can be used as a 3D rendered still or exported to another content creation application.
There are four core Substance applications with this first iteration of the Adobe Substance 3D Collection. Substance 3D Painter and Substance 3D Designer are the two ‘big’ applications.
Painter could, in effect, be seen as Photoshop for 3D models, with a similar layer system. It also brings an unparalleled selection of advanced tools to help create effective weathering techniques. Painter is also excellent at processing models and textures to work with other 3D applications, and has been an essential part of many artists’ toolsets for years. Designer was a tool for creating procedural textures but has now grown into a full procedural toolset for modelling and lighting.
