Blender has gone from strength to strength as a 3D creation tool over the past few years. Previously looked down upon by CG stalwarts due to its free, open-source and beginner-friendly nature, Blender has built a passionate community of users and can now be found in the pipelines of numerous animation studios and post-production houses. With a bunch of powerful features to explore, 2022 could be the ideal time to utilise Blender at no extra cost to yourself. 3D artist Thành Nguyen has been using Blender to take his characters to the next level for the past couple of years. We asked Nguyen to share how Blender helped him to create a furry adventurer for ArtStation’s 'Untamed: When Animals Ruled the World' challenge.
“When I first heard about the new ArtStation challenge, I knew that I was going to create a furry character so that I could practise and improve my skills in Blender’s hair system. Also, in order to be different from the other competitors I went for the postapocalyptic setting. The idea is that when humans have left the Earth and their old belongings and trash still remain, animals have evolved to take advantage of these things,” he explains.
