On May 5, 1983, Lockheed L-1011 Tristar 1 N334EA (c/n 1141) was rostered for a morning rotation from Miami/Miami International Airport to Nassau/Lynden Pindling International Airport in the Bahamas, with 172 passengers onboard. The widebody, powered by three Rolls-Royce RB211 turbofan engines, was operating for Eastern Air Lines as flight EA855.
