The new issue of AW (out April 3) looks ahead to Spring marathon season and reviews an eventful indoor season.
Cover star Alex Yee, the Olympic triathlon champion, talks in depth about making his debut over 26.2 miles, the lessons he hopes to learn from the process and why taking part in this month’s London Marathon will be bringing his athletics career full circle.
Another highly anticipated marathon debut in London will be that of Jacob Kiplimo, the Ugandan who recently destroyed the world half marathon record and whom many have tipped to become the first person to break two hours for the distance under normal conditions. George Mallett speaks to Italian Giuseppe Giambrone, the coach who first began to realise Kiplimo’s athletic potential.
When it comes to young British talent, the Mini London Marathon has helped with the development of a number of big names down the years and, as it celebrates its 40th edition, Tim Adams speaks to the organisers about its rich history and high ambitions for the future.
The AW pages also include wider preview features on London and the other athletes to keep an eye out, as well the ones to watch at this year’s Boston Marathon.
There are reflections on the indoor season, which included the European and World Indoor Championships. AW columnist Katharine Merry writes about why competing indoors does not always top athletes’ lists of priorities, as well as those who have used it perfectly, while we also hear from double 60m gold medallist Jeremiah Azu and another star athlete emerging from Norway – combined eventer Sander Skotheim.
Away from competition, Jasmine Collett investigates the growing trend of online abuse being directed at female athletes and the impact it can have on its victims, as well as hearing some practical advice on how to combat it.
There are interviews with British distance runners Jo Pavey and Jess Martin, while our performance section features plenty of coaching advice and marathon shoe reviews.
