Last year, through dogged determination, former trade union rep and lifelong campaigner Betty Gallacher rallied support in Eastbourne to stage the town’s first Pride

One Saturday last July, the oftensleepy seaside resort of Eastbourne woke up to a day of rainbow-filled celebrations as local LGBT+ group Bourne Out succeeded in staging the town’s first Pride event. The 2,500-strong turnout was more than treble the organisers’ expectations, and this year it’s projected to attract almost double that number of revellers.

But none of it would have been possible without the fierce determination of one woman, honoured this year with an Attitude Pride Award.
