THE TRIAL OF A TIME LORD

BY THE THIRTIETH CENTURY, HUMANITY HAS SPREAD across space and encountered the red-hued world of Mogar. A planet in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way, Mogar is inhabited by a peace-loving, golden-skinned race that can’t breathe oxygen, which isn’t part of the planetary atmosphere.

Mogar was once rich in natural resources considered rare by humans, including vionesium – a substance that releases intense light and carbon dioxide when exposed to oxygenated air. Limited concessions for mining rights were granted to human prospectors, but soon the Mogarians realised their planet was being stripped of its natural wealth by the newly arrived miners, whom they now look upon as “interplanetary locusts”. To transport vionesium and other minerals back to Earth, Hyperion Class intergalactic liners are employed for the dual purpose of passenger transport and top priority, high-security cargo runs. One such liner is the Hyperion III, which departs on Day 186 of Earth Year 2986. After a short delay caused by the late arrival of a Mogarian passenger, the vessel gets under way. Before long, however, the communications officer is overpowered and a mayday message is transmitted. Received in the TARDIS by the Doctor and Melanie, the message concludes: ‘-PERATIVE TRAITOR BE IDENTIFIED BEFORE LANDING EARTH MAYDAY END.’

About Doctor Who Magazine

“Space: the final frontier. Final, because it wants to kill us...” The TARDIS doesn’t just travel through time – stories set in space have been an essential part of Doctor Who for six decades. The inhospitable void between the stars has served as the backdrop to epic space operas and nerve-racking thrillers, while harbouring some of the most dangerous adversaries the Doctor has ever encountered. This lavish publication navigates a revealing course through the space lanes of Doctor Who, with exclusive interviews, rare images, and guides to some of the most memorable episodes.
