THE END OF THE WORLD

IN AN EFFORT TO IMPRESS HIS NEW COMPANION, THE Doctor takes Rose Tyler five billion years into the future to see the end of her world. They arrive on Platform One, a space station orbiting the now-deserted Earth. The sun is expanding and would have engulfed the planet already were it not for gravity satellites holding it back. But the money to maintain the satellites has run out and the destruction of Earth is now imminent. Using ‘psychic paper’, the Doctor gains access for Rose and himself to an exclusive event in which rich and privileged guests will witness the ‘Earth-death’ from the platform.

Among the guests is Lady Cassandra, who regards herself as the last ‘pure’ human, despite the fact that her obsession with cosmetic surgery has reduced her to little more than a patch of skin stretched across a mobile frame. The hooded and sinister Adherents of the Repeated Meme give each guest the gift of a small silver sphere. Unobserved, spider-like robots emerge from these spheres and interfere with the platform’s computer system. This causes the death by burning of the Steward in charge of the event when his office’s sun filter is lowered. Later, Rose is narrowly saved from the same fate by the Doctor.
