No./16 GETTING UNDER THE SKIN OF VECNA
WE BREAK DOWN THE BIG THEORIES AROUND STRANGER THINGS’ ELUSIVE NEW BADDIE
AN UNDEAD WIZARD?
Show creators the Duffer brothers are no strangers to plumbing Dungeons & Dragons lore for their villains, and Vecna could be no exception. First introduced to the game in 1976, Vecna — an anagram of influential fantasy/sci-fi writer Jack Vance’s surname — was a sorcerer who turned himself into an undead, evil ‘lich’ (creature).
A NON-DEAD BILLY?
In the latest trailer, Max (Sadie Sink) is seen levitating beside her brother Billy’s (Dacre Montgomery) grave, he having sacrificed himself in Season 3. Levitation is one of Vecna’s canonical D&D powers, and the link to Max may suggest Billy is lingering in The Upside Down. If Hopper (David Harbour) can sidestep death, why not Billy?
