Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom  |  August 2016
We’ve talked a lot about the rough luxe trend in this magazine which, with its use of natural materials and undone elements, along with touches of simple and understated glamour, give kitchens such a timeless feel. Just add a profusion of house plants and any newly renovated cooking and dining space will feel instantly homely. This dream mix of the rustic and the sophisticated has been slowly creeping into bathroom décor for a while now and this design season we can confirm that the all-white, streamlined look is being replaced with more organic, industrial vibes. However, just because it looks simple doesn’t mean it’s not glamorous, says Drummond Shaw from luxury bathroom brand Drummonds: ‘It’s not about Spartan living. The trick is to counterpoint rawness with luxury – the stripped back with high-end materials.’ So it’s taking that statement tub and putting it against weathered wood or concrete or, for instance, mixing exposed copper piping with an eyecatching lighting scheme. Read Raw Beauty (page 90) for more. Continuing in this vein, there’s a relaxed and sophisticated feel to all of our style and shopping pages throughout this summery issue, and more and more with a nod to ‘70s style too. Think wicker, raffia and macramé and turn to That Seventies Show on page 118; on our style pages there are hammocks, kilim rugs, dreamcatchers and trivets – see page 51 onwards. In Take it Outside (page 78) we show you how to create a laid-back outdoor area for entertaining alfresco and in A Little Imagination (page 108) we look at planning the perfect bedroom for your little ones. You can also meet Fearne Cotton on page 74, product designers Hunting & Narud on page 56 and and fashion design icon John Rocha on page 130. Enjoy the holidays!
