Numerous studies reveal that most of us incorrectly estimate how many calories we actually consume each day, especially if we’re already overweight. One piece of research published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that, on average, adults underestimate a massive 25% of their daily calorie intake. Given that the recommended daily intake for a woman is 2,000, we’re talking about ‘losing’ 500kcal.
Even committed dieters aren’t as clued up as they may think when it comes to calorie maths. One US study found that female slimmers also under-reported their intakes by almost 500kcal a day – significantly affecting weight loss.
