WORDS LAURA POTTER
Succumb to softball
You might think you don’t know how to play, but anyone who’s enjoyed the unrivalled carefree fun of an impromptu game of rounders is more than ready to take on this American favourite! And it’s worth it – you can bust 300 calories in an hour of fun.
‘You need 10 players and the bases set out in a diamond,’ says softball coach Claudine Snape. ‘An official game is seven innings – an inning is when both teams have had their turn to bat – and the ball has to be thrown underhand in a slow arc, so it’s easy to hit. It should cross the ‘strike zone’, which is between the knees and the shoulders. Batters are out if they miss three times (hence three strikes and you’re out!), or if they get caught before or “tagged” with the ball before reaching a base.’ See, it’s just like rounders! ‘You score a run if you get around all the bases and back to home plate, which you can either do in one go, or by one base at a time.’ The best part? Fielders get to wear a giant glove, which makes it way easier to catch the ball.
