I live in Moray, way up in Scotland, and I was wondering if you could recommend a garlic that would grow well up here. It gets very cold in the winter as you can imagine, with heavy frosts and snow.
EMMA SAYS: Garlic is generally very hardy, having adapted to life at high altitudes and a winter covering of snow, so I think most autumn planting varieties should be happy in your conditions. In fact you have a major grower only about an hour away from you and a little further north called The Really Garlicky Company.
Hardneck types are usually considered to be hardier than softnecks, but don’t store for as long after harvest. Having said this, there are softneck types that are sold for autumn planting.
