When The Strokes, released Is This It on 27 August, 2001, there was no way they or anyone else could have predicted the insanity that would follow. And it was a kind of madness. Only two years earlier they’d made their public debut at an unlamented New York club called Spiral to a handful of friends. By the end of 2003 they were the most talked about band on the planet, their own lives irrevocably altered and the cultural landscape radically redefined.
