When The Strokes, released Is This It on 27 August, 2001, there was no way they or anyone else could have predicted the insanity that would follow. And it was a kind of madness. Only two years earlier they’d made their public debut at an unlamented New York club called Spiral to a handful of friends. By the end of 2003 they were the most talked about band on the planet, their own lives irrevocably altered and the cultural landscape radically redefined. It nearly destroyed them and even though it didn’t quite, they were never the same again.
