THIS year’s winner of The Railway Magazine’s lifetime achievement award for preservation has been awarded to Martyn Ashworth. The presentation took place as part of the Heritage Railway Association’s annual awards event, which took place in central Birmingham on March 11.
Martyn is a well known figure to many within the heritage movement, having notched up more than 50 years of service so far. He began volunteering at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in 1970, but has taken on roles such as director at Peak Rail (including extending the line to Matlock); chief mechanical engineer at the Swanage Railway; events manager at the Great Central Railway; steam manager at Barrow Hill; and founder of Heritage Transport Supplies.
