THIS book, the first Railways Remembered title in what will be a series covering specific regions and collections of photographs, certainly sets a high standard.
All of the images (around 200 in total) are in colour, many of them from the Online Transport Archive (a UK charity to which the authors, both trustees of the organisation, have donated their fees). Others come from fellow charity the Restoration &Archiving Trust, from custodians of other collections, or from individual photographers. That they cover an era from the 1950s to 1970s, when black and white was still the most common medium for capturing railway images, and that many have not appeared in print before, makes this publication even more noteworthy.
Well-balanced and captioned with particular thought, it flows seamlessly, starting in Northumberland, close to the border with Scotland and working its way gradually southwards to areas that were once in the North Riding of Yorkshire.
