Torres News

Edition 212 Torres Strait leaders have welcomed an announcement the Australian Border Force will launch a new multi-agency operation to assist in combating illegal foreign fishing in northern Queensland and the Torres Strait. Bad weather was blamed for the appearance of an Indonesian 100-metrelong, crewless, empty barge off Athikho Poji Island, near Badu, late last month, and, in an unconfirmed sighting, another illegal fishing boat was filmed near Mapoon, on the western side of Cape York, last weekend. Walking out strong into its 10th year, Zenadth Kes Boxing Club is already punching above its weight, with packed-out classes in the program’s first week back and community of all ages, from four-year olds to open-age adults, lacing up the gloves.
