Mary Queen of Scots or Catherine de Medici: who was Elizabeth I’s ultimate rival?, 14 June The deadly rivalry between Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots is well known, but this turbulent period of history also produced a third powerful queen: Catherine de Medici – aformidable woman whose children went on to shape the dynasties of Europe.
