The promotion, by purchase, of Smyth, as recorded in the London Gazette on 26 June 1838
George Brunswick Smyth was raised in Chelsworth and became a youthful Redcoat, arriving in Australia in 1837 – two years after Melbourne was founded – and went on to become one of its foremost citizens. He was a magistrate and a military juror, a police captain and a justice of the peace. He founded The Melbourne Club – the home of our business community – and the Port Phillip Turf Club, the home of the Melbourne Cup and the Melbourne Cricket Club.
