By the early 1930s, whilst the sun had yet
to set on the British Empire, it was well into
mid-afternoon. The march of progress,
worldwide, highlighted the need for more
swift communication between the ‘Mother
Country’ and the far-fl ung territories on
which the sun ‘never set’.
