A doom-laden journey of physical and spiritual healing
Written in the midst of a tumultuous time for this Alabama quartet - drummer Eric Bigelow underwent a kidney transplant during the writing of the album - 1823 is steeped in emotion that shines through in Crystal Bigelow’s soaring and spiritual voice. Embr’s take on doom is rendered with subtle synth inflections, radiant pain and feverish riffs that seep under the skin. Opener Prurient is a heady mix of fuzzy guitars, sludge-driven passages and Crystal’s luxurious vocals while Eric’s gritty roar on Powder is a dynamic force. On the closing Vines, both vocalists add deep textures to a song whose tangible agony convalesces into shifting guitar patterns and cosmic keys.
