German death metal gladiators come up a little short
A German death metal sextet with an unfathomable penchant for bright yellow beach shorts, Stillbirth aren’t the kind of band that you’re meant to take too seriously. Their seventh album’s artwork, depicting two robots in gladiatorial combat amongst an arena strewn with human entrails, should give you an idea of where this sits in the grand heavy metal pantheon. Tool it ain’t. What it is, however, is very aggressive, frenetic, breakdown-heavy, cookie-monster inflicted death metal. For some fans of the genre, that will be more than enough and at least Stillbirth attempt to inject thematic continuity into Revive The Throne, breaking up the songs with sampled vignettes that continue the gladiatorial motif established on the artwork. However, there’s nothing here that Cannibal Corpse haven’t done 10 times before, and probably twice as well.
