Electronic beat making has long been founded on a push-pull relationship between tried-and-tested sounds and experimentation. This wasn’t always the case though; back in the early days of electronic music, everything was an experiment. When acts like Kraftwerk produced robotic-sounding electronic rhythms, or the pioneers of Detroit and Chicago created the loopy, propulsive beats of early house and techno, these artists were doing things that, for the most part, had never been tried before – because the technology to achieve them simply hadn’t existed.
