Qasim Naqvi
Chronology
Erased Tapes
Chronology was Qasim Naqvi’s first release of electronic music when he put it out digitally in 2016. Five years on and its masterful, controlled beauty finally sees the physical release that its many fans have been calling for since. Naqvi is best known as drummer for cult trio, Dawn of MIDI, but he had also been impressing within contemporary classical circles before this shift into electronic music took flight. Fittingly, his first excursion into this world was made exclusively on a malfunctioning synthesiser – an old Moog Model D. This move helps to give the record its broken but intimate feel, its rawness and directness. Naqvi conjures up intense feelings and a sense of beauty with his compositional genius. He loops synth recordings, adds delicate drones and includes the gentle whirring and crackling of the machine. It feels like Qasim Naqvi is playing live only for you, allowing you to sink deeper and deeper into his constructed reality. A slowly evolving album of unusual beauty and intimacy, Chronology is Qasim Naqvi’s finest electronic work to date.
