Vestals
Holy Origin
Dust Editions
Holy Origin is the beautifully dark, intense sophomore album from San Francisco-based artist, Lisa McGee’s always on-point Vestals project. Embracing electronic production to a greater degree than on 2012’s Forever Falling Towards The Sky, Vestals creates a record with plenty of negative space, slowed-down rhythms and room for each sound to manifest fully. The entire pace of the record is dialled way down, with slow-burning rhythms and languid, deep flowing bass. The atmosphere is spaced out and detached as Vestals’ avant-garde dream pop passes through a dubbed-out filter and creates a haunting and brooding aesthetic. Otherworldly FX jangle above raw guitars, drifting clouds of synths, breathy, sensuous vocals, shimmering harmonies and smudged melodies as we hover through this murky soundscape. Through the vulnerability and rawness, you see strength and clarity, conjured by Vestals’ sharp focus. An album that shrouds you in its mystery and melancholy, Holy Origin is Vestals at her impressionistic best.
