Using MPE without a controller
It’s natural that MPE is usually associated with MIDI controllers – its extra level of expression is well suited to the human interaction of actually ‘playing’ a keyboard device. There is, however, nothing stopping you from making use of MPE purely ‘in-thebox’ as a means to finesse your MIDI sequencing. Those multidimensional control signals work just as well used to automate or modulate sounds, as you might using regular velocity or pitch bend, but on a per-note level.
