Your wildlife month

The old saying goes that March is ‘in like a lion, out like a lamb’, and climate change can make this contrast more dramatic. Many birds may already be nesting, but a late cold spell could play havoc with sources of food for their chicks, such as caterpillars. Frogs and toads will be in or heading to their breeding ponds, while bees, butterflies, hoverflies and all sorts of invertebrates will be taking advantage of any mild conditions, getting ready to breed, feasting on the year’s first flowers. If it’s cold, keep feeding the birds. If dry, water plants with grey water so they can support invertebrates, and leave out a dish of mud for red mason bees and nesting birds. A little helping hand goes a long way.
