Fit for a Queen

Former royal chef Darren McGrady lifts the lid on his time cooking for Her Majesty and shares some of her favourite recipes


She is the longest-reigning female monarch in world history. During her six decades on the throne she has been served by 12 Prime Ministers, seen seven Popes elected and undertaken almost 300 official overseas visits to 129 countries, making her the most-travelled sovereign. Long ago Queen Elizabeth surpassed the longevity of the average British woman, yet she shows few signs of slowing down.

So what’s the secret to her good health? While genes have a part to play – her mother lived to 101 – and regular exercise in the form of walking her corgis and horse riding are significant, her former chef Darren McGrady believes Her Majesty’s diet is also key to her legendary stamina.

He cooked for the Queen for more than a decade, held Prince Harry as a baby, danced with the Princess of Wales, talked food with the Duke of Edinburgh, chopped rabbit for royal dog food and, of course, created banquets for many Kings and Queens from around the world at Her Majesty’s residences and even on the Royal Yacht Britannia. The 1986 wedding breakfast of the new Duke and Duchess of York was a highlight of his career. Here, he lifts the lid on cooking for the Queen…
