T he red X-shaped object in the image above is a chromosome, a DNA molecule that contains some or all of the genetic material in your body. The little blue caps on the ends of it are telomeres, which protect the molecule, but also play a huge role in the ageing process. Those tiny parts of our genetic make-up dictate an enormous part of our lives, our quality of life and how many years we can expect to live. In this issue of How It Works, we explore the ageing process and what’s happening in your body from the moment you were born right across every stage of your life. We also look at some of the technologies scientists are exploring that could extend human life in the future.
