MADAGASCAR’S JELLYFISH
By Bombetoka Bay in northwest Madagascar, this estuary feeds water from the largest river in Madagascar, the Betsiboka River, which is around 326 miles long, into the Mozambique Channel. As a result, tentacle-like streams and rivers have carved their way through the landscape, creating this jellyfish shape. The reddish-brown colouring between the estuary’s many paths is caused by washed sediments that have been stripped from the surrounding hills. This was taken by Japan’s Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS), which can take high-resolution images of Earth’s coastline around 43 miles at a time.
